Inquiry Unit Plan Outline Draft


Topic: Birds         Grade Level: Kindergarten            


Curricular Big Ideas:

Mathematics: Repeating elements in patterns can be identified.
Socials: Rights, roles and responsibilities shape our identity and help us build healthy relationships with others. 
Sciences: Plants and animals have observable features.
Arts: Engagement in the arts creates opportunities for inquiry through purposeful play.
ADST: Designs grow out of natural curiosity and Skills can be developed through play.
French Language Arts: All

2nd and 3rd tier vocabulary: bec, ailes, griffes, queue, plumes, migration, chantonner, déchiqueter, poreux, nids


Essential questions being considered:



What are birds?
What are feathers? How are feathers important?
How are beaks different and useful to birds?
What sounds do birds make? Are birds smart?
What are nests? Can you build a nest? Do all birds build nests?
What are the needs of birds?
Where do birds go in the Winter?


Learning objectives:

Students will understand that …


Birds share common characteristics and features.
Birds have adapted to their environment in different ways (ex. Beaks, nests, migration, etc.) to survive.
Bird feathers allow them to fly, to keep warm, to swim and to camouflage.
Birds songs are like languages.

Lesson #1: What are birds?


  • Determining distinguishing features of birds (wings, beaks, claws, etc) 
  • Note observations of bird activity, ways of living (migration, building nests, flying, eating)

Lesson #2: What are feathers? How are they important? 


  • Noticing features of bird feathers 
  • Explore uses of feathers and discuss adaptations 

Lesson #3: How are beaks different and important to birds?


  • Observe bird beak features 
  • Explore and notice different sizes, shapes
  • Make connections from beak features to bird diet 

Lesson #4: How are bird songs important?


  • Analyze bird songs and notice the purpose of bird song (communication)
  • Match bird song to bird type 

Lesson #5: What are nests? Can you build a nest? Do all birds build nests?


  • Discuss purpose of bird nests
  • Explore features of bird nests and analyze different components 
  • Make connection to our version of a birds nest 

Lesson #6: How do birds adapt to season cycles?


  • Notice and explore seasonal bird behaviours 
  • Make connections that explain these behaviours 
  • What else changes through different seasons?
